Summit three active Italian volcanoes - Vesuvius, Stromboli and Etna while enjoying spectacular transfers by sea. From £1445.
Accompanied throughout by a volcanologist (a geologist who specialises in volcanoes), who will be able to explain the history of the volcanoes, their geological make up, specific features, eruptions, and their future, this trip ticks all the bucket list boxes.
Day 1 London – Naples –Monte Vesuvio Volcano
Departing London on an early flight we arrive into Naples before lunch. We will be welcomed by our Volcano Team at the airport and take a short transfer to Monte Vesuvio – Vesuvius in English. As you will be aware, this is a world-renowned volcano as well as being one of the most picturesque and easily-accessed. It destroyed the famous city of Pompeii in AD 79 and its fertile soil is responsible for growing some of the most delicious foods in Italy. It remains the only active volcano on mainland Europe.
Our trek takes us to the summit of the volcano and onto the crater. From here there are great views across the Bay of Naples. We head back to Naples in time for our overnight ferry to Stromboli departing at 2000hrs.
Overnight ferry from Naples to Stromboli. Meals included lunch (this will be in a traditional Naples pizzeria/restaurant where we will have the famous "pizza napoletana")
Day 2 – Arrive Stromboli, Stromboli summit and sunset lava experience
Arriving into Stromboli at daybreak on the overnight ferry from Naples is a remarkable and breathtaking experience with fabulous views. This little island is only 12 square km and has around 600 inhabitants.
We will be collected from the ferry and taken to our hotel for breakfast. After, we will have time to visit the local town and have our lunch at the hotel before we head off on our afternoon trek to the Stromboli craters. As we start our trek we can enjoy the intense blue of the Mediterranean Sea set against the darkness of the volcanic sand of Stromboli beaches and the whiteness of the village below. The highlight of trekking on Volcano Stromboli is the timing of it. Carefully timed to reach the summit at sunset, expect tosee the bright red lava explosions from the craters belowset against the darkness of the surroundings. This is a truly incredible experience on an active volcano.
4 hours walking, ascent 400m descent 400m, 9km
Overnight 4 Star Hotel Sirenetta or similar. Meals included breakfast and lunch in the hotel and packed snacks for afternoon trek.
Day 3 Stromboli to Milazzo, Mount Etna lateral craters, Catania
We leave Stromboli after an early breakfast and travel to Milazzo by hydrofoil (approximately 3 hours). We can enjoy views of the Aeolian islands as we head towards Sicily, and simply soak up the sun.
From Milazzo, we travel to Zafferana, a city which draws its resources from the volcano, built with the black stone of Etna. It is surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape and here we can enjoy a delicious Sicilian lunch. In the afternoon, we can trek to some of the lateral craters of Etna (cones from its 1865 eruption) on the eastern slopes. This is an easy walk. After reaching the top cones at 1745m, we will have views of the huge lava field created in the 1865 eruption, with the top of Etna visible in the background. If we are feeling energetic we can take a steeper route to the Valle del Bove rim. At the end of our trek the bus will take us to Catania where we stay the night.
Overnight 4 Star Hotel Romano House or similar. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 4 – Mount Etna Summit Crater
Etna towers above Catania, Sicily's second largest city. Still active, it has one of the world's longest documented records of historical volcanism, dating back to 1500 BC. Historical lava flows of basaltic composition cover much of the surface of this massive volcano. The Mongibello stratovolcano, truncated by several small calderas, was constructed during the late Pleistocene and Holocene over an older shield volcano.
Today is our Etna summit trek, starting with a journey by cable car to 2500m and then we take 4x4 buses up to 2900m. On foot, we head higher to 3350m to reach the main crater rim. We then retrace our steps andtrek along the rim of the Bove valley, an extensive depression that opened up thousands of years ago as a result of a massive landslide. At the summit, we can enjoy the impressive views and take some fantastic photos.
Approximately six hours trekking and gaining 450m of ascent over a 9km route.
Overnight 4 Star Hotel Romano House or similar. Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner.
