Conquer Mount M’Goun (4071m), a summit in the heart of the M'Goun Massif, hidden deep in the Central High Atlas mountains of Morocco.

The M'Goun Massif is a spectacular spine of mountain ridges and sculpted valleys and this summit is the second highest point in North Africa.  Located in the remote Ait Bougamez Valley, ‘The Happiness Valley’, which gets its name from the cheerful and welcoming local people, this summit is regarded as Morocco’s best kept secret.

We will follow ancient caravan routes as we trek through the valley and high plateau, finally reaching Mount M’Goun which is the valley’s crowning glory and a superb peak for true adventurers aspiring to get well off the beaten track.  The Massif is surrounded by fragrant orchards, dramatic gorges and lush pastures and we discover a hidden pocket of Morocco where travellers are rarely seen. By day we trek through this amazing scenery while at night, we camp on the beautiful high pastures used by nomadic shepherds.

The Itinerary

Day 1 – London - Marrakech – Damnat

After meeting your Tribal Tracks leader at the London departure airport, we will arrive in Marrakech and will be met by our local team.  We transfer to the village of Damnat, approximately two and half hours from Marrakech. Tonight will be spent in a guesthouse in Damnat.

Overnight in a Guesthouse in twin share rooms, lunch and dinner.

Day 2 – Damnat to Timit village

After breakfast, we transfer to the start of the trek in the village of Timit, where we will be welcomed by our trek support crew and mules.

Our adventure begins by trekking along the Aarous Valley, passing through mountain villages which provides us with the opportunity to meet the local Berber communities.  Berber history dates back to prehistoric times, and their way of life remains blissfully simple, like stepping back in time hundreds of years.  Our camp for the night will be in the valley of Aarous.

4 hours trekking – 9km/1800m.  Camping in twin share tents with full board supported by our trek crew.

Day 3 – Tarkedit Plateau

After breakfast, we continue our ascent.  Enjoying the wild landscape as the route heads over the Aghouri Pass at 3450m, we descend to the wind-eroded high plateau of Tarkedit at 2900m. After a well-deserved lunch break, we continue to climb up to the southern side of the plateau to the campsite at 3400m, found directly below M'Goun’s west face.

7-8 hours trekking – 13km/3400m.  Camping in twin share tents with full board supported by our trek crew.

Day 4 – Summit day!

Today is the big day and we will get to summit one of the highest mountains in Northern Africa!  It will be an early start and a long day as to reach the summit, and then return to the campsite, will need around 10 hours of trekking.  That said, the going will be steady and it will be a non-technical trek, with plenty of stops.

The trek takes us through deep winding gorges and up onto a high open ridge.  From there, we follow the long ridge, (mostly above an altitude of 4,000m) to reach the summit.  From the top, there are impressive views across the Draa valley and towards the Sahara Desert to the south before we descent back to Oulimit.

Upwards of 10 hours trekking – 15km/4071m.  Camping in twin share tents with full board supported by our trek crew.

Day 5 – Descend from Oulimit to Tabant

On this, the final day of the trek, we leave Oulimit and head towards Tabant, via Tizi Ait Imi, with stunning views of the Happiness Valley.  We will be met by our transport at Tabant and transfer to our Gite in Damnat to freshen up and enjoy a well-deserved rest.  Tonight the team can celebrate their achievements with a hot shower and a celebration meal.

7 hours trekking – 13km.  Overnight in Gite in Damnat in twin share rooms and full board.

Day 6 – Homeward bound

After breakfast we will transfer back to Marrakech for our flight home.  Depending on flight times, we may have time for some last-minute shopping in the souks before a final lunch on a rooftop restaurant in Marrakech.
