Rewilding the Dalnacardoch Estate with Durrell Wildlife Conservation — Join the Adventure in the Cairngorms
Earlier this year, we took an adventurous group of Durrell supporters to India for their ambitious 'Founder's Trek' in Sikkim. They were raising money to help save the world’s smallest pig, the pygmy hog (read the trip diaries here). This time, we're staying closer to home...
Tribal Tracks is proud to highlight the remarkable rewilding project at Dalnacardoch Estate, led by Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in the heart of Cairngorms National Park, Scotland.
This is one of the most ambitious conservation projects currently underway in the UK. Set across the 18,500-acre Dalnacardoch Estate in the Cairngorms, Durrell's 100-year rewilding vision is about giving nature the time and space it needs to recover. The aim is simple in principle, but huge in scale: restore native habitats, re-ignite natural ecological processes and create the conditions for iconic wildlife to return to this remarkable Scottish landscape.
The work is already well underway. Recent peatland restoration, supported by Peatland ACTION funding, is helping to re-wet degraded bogs, safeguard vital carbon stores and rebuild habitats for wetland birds and other species that depend on healthy peat ecosystems.
The Tribal Tracks Cairngorms Three Peaks Challenge and Project Visit brings this story to life. Taking place from 17–20 September 2026, this four-day fundraising challenge combines expertly guided trekking in one of the UK's most dramatic national parks with the opportunity to learn directly about rewilding in action. It is a rare opportunity to learn about on-the-ground conservation progress, not just read about it.
With limited places available, participant fundraising (a target of £1,500pp) will play a meaningful role in extending the progress, reach and impact of Durrell's work. It is a UK-based adventure with purpose. Protecting wild places matters!
